KESTREL 4200 POCKET AIR FLOW TRACKER MEASURES GRAINS AND CFM WITHOUT A CALCULATOR
JANUARY 2007, BOOTHWYN, PA… Nielsen-Kellerman, manufacturer of Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters, announces the release of its second Kestrel designed specifically for the HVAC industry—the Kestrel 4200 Pocket Air Flow Tracker. This cell phone-sized instrument measures volume air flow, humidity ratio, temperature, relative humidity, dewpoint, barometric pressure, altitude, wet bulb temperature, wind chill, heat stress index, and density altitude, and logs 2000 data points.
“Automatic CFM and grains readings revolutionize a technician’s job by eliminating the need for reference charts, calculators or spreadsheets. And the 4200’s versatility and portability allows the user to replace multiple bulky, expensive instruments with the 4 ounce Kestrel—every environmental reading can be measured and recorded with one 4200,” says Product Manager Michael Naughton.
To automatically measure volume air flow with a Kestrel 4200, the user chooses the shape of the duct or opening (rectangle or circle), then enters the dimensions and holds the unit into the air flow. The value is displayed in cfm, m3/h, m3/m, m3/s or L/s. In order to ensure accurate readings when the air flow is fluctuating or variable across the duct, the 4200 has a simple averaging function that lets the user control the timing of the averaging. Because the Kestrel holds the maximum and average flow values on its screen, this function is also ideal for technicians taking readings in ducts that are reachable, but may be hard to see.
The 4200’s automatic humidity ratio readings are powered by the unit’s patented temperature-adjusted RH sensor, which allows the Kestrel to rapidly measure relative humidity to an accuracy of ±3%, even in changing environments. Humidity ratio readings can be displayed in grains per pound or kilograms per pound (gpp or kg/p). The RH sensor can also be field calibrated, and NIST-traceable test and calibration is offered from NK. The Kestrel 4200 offers humidity readings as accurate as equipment costing far more, and is ideal for dehumidification professionals.
Some of the features that make the Kestrel 4200 suitable for HVACR applications include:
- Averaging mode that allows users measuring CFM to traverse a duct. The Kestrel automatically averages the air flow.
- Rugged, Pocket Sized Design Withstands Any Conditions: the 4200 is significantly smaller than other products on the market, fitting easily in technicians pocket or tool belt.
- 2000 Data Point Logger with Computer Interface Ideal for Facilities Monitoring: the logging interval is set to store data automatically with a customizable frequency (every 2 seconds to ever 12 hours), providing flexibility in monitoring conditions in a specific area over time. The stored data can be viewed on the Kestrel’s screen in chart form, or can be uploaded to a computer using the optional interface. Minimum, maximum and average values are also stored.
- Every Required Environmental Measurement in One Instrument: other readings include temperature, relative humidity, and dewpoint. The patented rapid-response temperature sensor is external, allowing the Kestrel to take readings within ±1°C in under a minute. The unit can also be set to Imperial or Metric measurement scales.
The predecessor to the 4200, the Kestrel 4100, was enthusiastically embraced by the HVAC market when released in 2005, and was awarded one of The ACHR News’ Dealer Design Awards (www.achrnews.com). It was a Bronze Medal winner in the Testing and Monitoring Products category, where products were judged on ease of installation, ease of maintenance, ease of service or repair, differentiation from other competitive products, and overall installation and service benefits to the contractor (i.e., time savings, serviceability by inexperienced technicians, diagnostic capabilities, etc.). An independent panel of 65 contractors judged over 114 new products from 82 manufacturers. Said one of the judges about the Kestrel 4100 Pocket Air Flow Tracker, “Every technician I employ will have one of these ASAP!”
The Kestrel 4200 Pocket Air Flow Tracker retails for $349 and the optional computer interface retails for $109. Kestrel Pocket Weather Meters also manufacturers12 other models, ranging in price and capability. All are available direct from NK.
Nielsen-Kellerman’s Kestrel Weather division has been researching, developing and manufacturing technically advanced portable weather instruments for over eight years and owns multiple patents on their unique features. All Kestrels are manufactured in Boothwyn, PA, and come with a 5-year warranty.
